Michelle Salz-Smith:
Originally from the Midwest, Michelle headed to the South for her big adventure and followed her passion for interior design. During her stint in Texas, Michelle developed her talents in both commercial and residential design working for a couple of different interior design firms.
Michelle had finally found her true calling and so then headed to beautiful Southern California where her new life began. After a few years of heading up a West Coast office for an established commercial interior design firm, Michelle finally branched out on her own.  Michelle is a nationally licensed Interior Designer and Professional Member of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID). She is also a Certified Interior Designer in the state of California by the CCIDC as well as a NCIDQ certificate holder and panel juror (National Council for Interior Design Qualification). Michelle also teaches part time at the Design Institute of San Diego. She currently resides with her husband Jake and their son Oliver in Del Mar, California.

The Design Studio:
Influenced by her travels, work, and the aesthetics and attitudes from the various regions where she has lived, Michelle drew upon her lifetime of visual experiences and love for all things design to create the interior design firm Studio Surface.

The Shop:
Michelle teamed up with her husband Jake, craftsman, artist and fabricator extraordinaire to design and create original personal and home accessories and furniture.  Michelle as a designer and Jake as artist bring the perfect mix to the wood and metal designs they create.

And as a companion to her design studio and shop, her blog is a collection of her musings, inspirations, resources, and day-to-day experiences all which underpin Studio Surface’s offerings.
